Homo Faber

For its first edition, from 14 to 30 September 2018, the Homo Faber biennial has moved into the magnificent Fondazione Giorgio Cini, on the San Giorgio Maggiore island, in Venice, Italy. Organised by the Michelangelo Foundation, the exhibition highlights the diversity and creativity of European artistic crafts.

For this unprecedented event, the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation presents a manifesto exhibition entitled 'For the intelligence of the hand', in which the 100 laureates of the Liliane Bettencourt prize for the intelligence of the hand are featured through a selection of works, photos, works and virtual-reality films.

One of the artworks on show is Nelly Saunier's 'Pin', from the 'Nature Transformée' series, inspired by her time as an artist in residence at the Villa Kujoyama in Japan. 'Pin' gives the appearance of a resinous branch, which has been reworked to look like a winding bonsai tree, and dyed with kakishibu, an ancient Japanese dyeing technique. It is a trompe-l'oeil, an illusion where the feather disappears, letting our imaginations run free.

Artistic crafts have this "capacity to re-enchant our world", believes Alain Lardet, the exhibition's curator. "The decorative or symbolic object is inscribed – today as in the past – in an artistic expression in its own right."
